Pakistan expands fuel relief scheme for motorcycles and rickshaws
The Pakistani federal government has implemented several major updates to the Prime Minister’s Special Fuel Relief Scheme to expand coverage and ease accessibility for low-income citizens.
Key changes include extending eligibility for motorcycles, rickshaws, and Qingqi rickshaws to vehicles registered on or after January 1, 2006, effectively including 20-year-old vehicles. Additionally, the government has abolished the mandatory minimum five-litre purchase requirement for two- and three-wheelers. Eligible users will now receive a weekly fuel token worth Rs500, which can be redeemed for any quantity of petrol. For vehicles with engine capacities up to 800cc, the existing system remains, providing a 10-litre token every 10 days.
To further facilitate users, SMS registration via the 9771 service has been made free of charge. The government has also directed that petrol stations must provide the full value of the relief tokens without deducting service fees. In areas with limited internet connectivity, such as parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, alternative SMS-based redemption mechanisms have been approved.
As of recent reports, over 1.75 million registrations have been completed, with approximately 1.5 million tokens generated. While officials noted the rollout as a success, data indicates that current registrations represent a small fraction of the estimated 32 million registered motorcycles in the country.
