Pakistan expands lithium battery assembly through Chinese partnerships
Several Pakistani companies are partnering with Chinese manufacturers to establish domestic lithium-ion battery assembly plants to meet rising demand from the country’s growing solar power market.
Karachi-based ME Solar Energy is investing $15 million in a partnership with China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL). The plant is expected to be operational by March, with a monthly capacity of 10,000 five-kilowatt lithium-ion batteries. Other notable ventures include Treet Battery, a subsidiary of Treet Corporation, which plans to work with China’s Contemporary Nebula Technology Energy, and Islamabad-based Kohinoor Energy, which intends to partner with Hebei Juhang Energy Technology Group.
This shift toward local assembly follows a significant surge in imports. United Nations data indicates that Pakistan’s lithium-ion battery imports rose from $60 million in 2024 to $171 million in 2025, with China accounting for $167 million of that total. While local production aims to capture market share, industry experts note that falling global battery prices and China’s massive production capacity present ongoing challenges for new domestic entrants.
