Pakistan explores Airbus and Rolls-Royce options for PIA fleet

Pakistan is exploring fleet modernization and aircraft leasing options for the newly privatized Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). During a meeting in Islamabad between Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, discussions focused on potential arrangements involving Airbus aircraft and Rolls-Royce engines.

The talks included the possibility of UK export credit support to assist with future aviation transactions. While leasing is being considered to meet the airline’s immediate operational requirements, longer-term aircraft purchases remain an option for future development.

These negotiations follow previous efforts by the Pakistani government to secure financing for Boeing aircraft through the US Export-Import Bank. The government has clarified that it will not purchase aircraft for the privatized PIA or provide sovereign guarantees or taxpayer-funded loans; instead, its role is to facilitate access to international technology, suppliers, and financing, leaving commercial risks to the airline and its investors.
