Pakistan explores Libyan crude oil imports to diversify energy supplies
Pakistan is investigating the importation of Libyan crude oil to diversify its energy sources and mitigate risks associated with major maritime shipping routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb strait. By sourcing oil from Libya, which exports via the Mediterranean, Pakistan aims to reduce its exposure to potential disruptions in the Gulf.
During the 17th International Energy Forum in Riyadh, Pakistani Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik met with Libyan Oil and Gas Minister Khalifa Rajab Abdulsadek to discuss bilateral cooperation. Malik stated that the Pakistani government is encouraging domestic refineries to evaluate Libyan crude opportunities.
In response, Abdulsadek indicated intentions to encourage Libya’s National Oil Corporation to increase volumes allocated to Pakistani companies. The discussions also touched upon potential cooperation regarding refinery modernization, with Libya expressing interest in Pakistan’s expertise to upgrade its oil infrastructure and improve processing efficiency.
