Pakistan faces economic strain and constitutional instability
Pakistan is currently facing significant economic and political instability. The government, led by Shehbaz Sharif, recently implemented minor reductions in fuel prices, lowering petrol by PKR 1.65 and high-speed diesel by PKR 0.88 per litre. However, these cuts follow substantial previous increases, with petrol rising by PKR 12.9 and diesel by PKR 3.72 per litre. This volatility occurs amid double-digit inflation and rising costs for essential commodities like wheat, leaving much of the population struggling with food security.
Simultaneously, the country is grappling with a deep-seated constitutional crisis characterized by a perpetual state of political confrontation. Reports indicate a significant imbalance between constitutional authority and actual power, as institutions frequently operate outside established boundaries. This instability is manifested through ongoing tensions involving the PTI party, preventive arrests ahead of political marches, and disputes regarding the medical care and legitimacy of Imran Khan.
