Pakistan faces insulin shortage due to German manufacturer supply halt
A shortage of a specific insulin product used by Type 1 diabetes patients has emerged in Pakistan after its German manufacturer halted supplies to upgrade its products. Parliamentary Secretary for Health Nelson Azeem informed the National Assembly that while stocks were available through September, disruptions began in October.
The shortage is reportedly affecting regions beyond Pakistan, including parts of Asia, Australia, and Europe. Officials noted that supply levels have dropped from 3,500 kits to approximately 1,000 kits, with further declines possible during the year-long upgrade process.
While the health ministry stated that alternative insulin products with similar dosages are available, lawmakers raised concerns regarding accessibility and cost. MNA Syeda Amna Batool noted that alternatives can be at least 20 per cent more expensive and highlighted that approximately 34.5 million people in Pakistan live with Type 1 diabetes.
