Pakistan farmers announce nationwide protests and demand Punjab CM resignation

Agricultural unions in Pakistan have announced plans for nationwide protests, including a ‘Million March’ toward Rawalpindi scheduled for September 25. The demonstrations aim to demand the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

Representatives from the Pakistan Farmers Union and the Pakistan Kissan Ittehad (PKI) cited several grievances, including the rising costs of fertilizer and electricity, which have increased production expenses. Farmers reported struggling to secure adequate returns for their crops, specifically noting issues with wheat procurement and lower crop yields.

Additional complaints include delayed payments for sugarcane, raids on farmers' homes, and the perceived neglect of underdeveloped areas in South Punjab. Union leaders criticized current agricultural policies and subsidies, stating that provincial government projects appear to benefit contractors rather than growers. The unions warned that if their demands are not met, farmers from Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Punjab will join the march to press for systemic changes.
