Pakistan Fisherfolk Call for Deep‑Sea Mining Moratorium on World Ocean Day

On World Ocean Day, the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) demanded a global moratorium on deep‑sea mining, urging the inclusion of indigenous coastal communities in ocean governance. PFF General Secretary Saeed Baloch warned that mining would destroy fragile habitats, release toxic sediments and disrupt ecological processes, threatening fisheries, food security and climate regulation for millions who depend on the sea. The forum appealed to the Pakistani government, the International Seabed Authority and corporations to prioritize ocean protection over profit.

The day’s theme, “Reimagine: Beyond the World We Know, A New Relationship with Our Ocean,” was highlighted worldwide, emphasizing the ocean’s role in oxygen production, carbon absorption and biodiversity. Experts noted that 90 % of large fish stocks are depleted and half of coral reefs are lost, underscoring urgent calls for expanded marine protected areas and sustainable practices.
