Pakistan fuel prices rise as PM announces relief for small vehicles

Pakistan has experienced a sharp rise in fuel costs, with diesel prices exceeding Rs 400 per litre and petrol rising above Rs 375 per litre. These increases follow a series of back-to-back hikes driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East and rising global crude oil prices.

In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a special petrol relief scheme to assist low-income commuters. Under this initiative, owners of motorcycles, rickshaws, and Qingqis can receive a subsidy of Rs 100 per litre on a monthly quota of 20 litres. Additionally, owners of small vehicles with engine capacities up to 800cc are eligible for the Rs 100 per litre subsidy on a monthly quota of 30 litres.

The relief scheme will be rolled out in phases, starting in Islamabad before expanding to the rest of the country, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. To facilitate the program, the Ministry of Information Technology has implemented a digital registration system involving NADRA and telecom operators. Eligible citizens can register via SMS and must use a digital token to claim the discounted fuel at petrol stations.
