RIMS Adilabad hospital fire kills three infants
A fire broke out in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Adilabad, Telangana, late Monday night. Preliminary investigations suggest the blaze was triggered by an air-conditioning unit malfunction or explosion, which quickly filled the ward with thick, toxic smoke.
At least three infants have died as a result of the incident. During the emergency, hospital staff and distraught parents reportedly broke glass panels to evacuate the babies from the smoke-filled ward. Approximately 28 children were successfully rescued and evacuated, with many being shifted to private hospitals for treatment. Several infants remain in critical condition.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has ordered a formal inquiry into the cause of the fire and directed officials to strengthen safety measures across all hospitals in the state. District Collector Rajarshi Shah and local police are overseeing the investigation to identify any potential negligence.
