Pakistan implements fuel subsidies and winter gas management plans

The Pakistani government is implementing dual measures to address energy challenges: a fuel subsidy program for low-income citizens and a winter gas load management plan.

To mitigate the impact of rising energy costs driven by regional geopolitical tensions, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved a targeted fuel relief program. Over 9 million low-income individuals, including motorcycle riders, rickshaw operators, and small car owners, are receiving subsidies via digital tokens. This initiative follows political pressure from groups like Jamaat-e-Islami to ease the burden of inflation and high fuel prices.

Simultaneously, the government is preparing for winter gas shortages. In a recent meeting, Prime Minister Sharif directed authorities to prioritize domestic consumers for local gas supplies while reserving imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for industrial use and power generation. Officials are working to ensure uninterrupted gas imports for the December-to-February period, with discussions ongoing regarding the number of LNG cargoes required to meet demand. The government is also exploring bank financing for electric heating appliances to reduce reliance on gas.
