Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences launches modernization initiatives
The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has launched several initiatives aimed at modernizing medical infrastructure, improving patient care, and expanding clinical services. Supported by the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, the hospital is upgrading outdated electromedical equipment in departments such as General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and the Dialysis Unit.
Key operational improvements include streamlining the procurement of medicines and essential equipment to ensure uninterrupted supplies to inpatient wards and outpatient departments. Surgical units are also being equipped with specialized instruments and consumables to maintain smooth operations.
On the academic front, PIMS plans to introduce new master’s degree programmes in specialized surgical fields, including Breast, Colorectal, Hepatobiliary, and Minimal Access Surgery, in affiliation with Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU). The institution also intends to establish a dedicated Department of Thoracic Surgery and an independent Emergency Medicine Department. Additionally, the Mother and Child Health (MCH) Centre is undergoing structural rehabilitation to increase bed capacity and operating suites.
