Pakistan introduces AI sign language interpreter for hearing-impaired

An AI-based sign language interpreter and assistant system, named Sano, has been introduced in Pakistan to support hearing-impaired individuals. Developed by a Pakistani institution in collaboration with Ufone, the technology is designed to translate spoken language and important announcements into Pakistani Sign Language.

The system aims to bridge the communication gap for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Initially, the project focused on natural disasters and emergency situations, such as floods or earthquakes, to ensure that critical warnings—which are typically issued via audio—can be understood by those who cannot hear. The initiative seeks to use a combination of AI and human expertise to make education, workplaces, and digital platforms more accessible.
