Pakistan issues high-level cyberattack alert for WhatsApp users

Pakistan’s National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT) has issued a high-level advisory warning of targeted phishing and malware attacks against WhatsApp Web and desktop users. The threat specifically targets Windows systems, with attackers impersonating government officials and departments to distribute malicious files disguised as official documents.

If executed, these files can allow hackers to gain remote control of devices, steal passwords, and access sensitive data. The advisory also warns that attackers may hijack WhatsApp Web sessions to impersonate users, putting confidential communications at risk.

NCERT has recommended that government officials and individuals handling sensitive information avoid using WhatsApp Web and desktop applications on Windows systems. Users are advised to enable two-step verification, keep software updated, and immediately terminate any suspicious linked devices or sessions. In the event of a suspected compromise, users should disconnect the device from the internet and preserve system logs as evidence.
