Pakistan marks 79th Independence Day with calls for unity

Pakistan marked its 79th Independence Day with nationwide celebrations, including flag-hoisting ceremonies, gun salutes, and messages from top civil and military leadership. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the responsibility of the current generation to pursue economic growth, education, and stability, while paying tribute to the nation's founders.

The military leadership, including the heads of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, reaffirmed their commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Armed Forces also honored the sacrifices of martyrs and veterans, calling for national unity under the principles of “Faith, Unity, and Discipline.”

Internationally, the occasion drew various responses. The United States, through Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reaffirmed its partnership with Islamabad. Indonesia’s ambassador highlighted enduring friendship, and Turkey celebrated by illuminating the 15 July Martyrs’ Bridge in Pakistani national colors. Additionally, a statue of founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah was unveiled in Washington, D.C., to honor his legacy.
