Pakistan mineral reserves estimated at $8 trillion

Pakistan possesses an estimated $8 trillion in mineral reserves spanning 600,000 square kilometers. The country is positioned within the Tethyan Metallogenic Belt, a significant geological zone for copper and gold. Key minerals include copper, gold, lithium, and rare earth elements, which are essential for clean energy technologies such as electric vehicles and solar panels.

The Reko Diq project in the Chagai district of Balochistan is a primary focus. As one of the world’s largest undeveloped copper and gold deposits, it is managed through a joint venture involving Barrick Gold Corporation (50 percent), the Balochistan government (25 percent), and three federal state-owned companies (25 percent). A 2025 feasibility study confirmed a 37-year mine life for the project.

Currently, the mining sector contributes less than 3 percent to Pakistan’s GDP. However, the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan (ICMA) estimates that improved governance and security could increase annual mineral exports from $3 billion to $8 billion, potentially raising GDP growth from 3 percent to 6 percent.
