Pakistan Minister proposes National Cybersecurity Council and AI labeling

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has proposed the establishment of a National Cybersecurity and Social Media Awareness Council to combat misinformation, deepfakes, and emerging digital security threats. Speaking at the inauguration of Cybersecurity Awareness Week 2026 organized by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Tarar emphasized the need for a coordinated national framework involving provincial governments, federal ministries, and various regulatory bodies.

The proposal includes a call for mandatory labeling of artificial intelligence-generated content on social media platforms to help users distinguish genuine information from manipulated media. To bolster long-term resilience, Tarar recommended integrating digital literacy into school, college, and university curricula through a research-based system that updates regularly. He also advocated for specialized cybersecurity training for government officials and the creation of digital literacy cells across organizations nationwide.
