Pakistan monsoon death toll exceeds 100 as heavy rain forecast
Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that the monsoon season has killed more than 100 people since late June, with the latest figure ranging from 107 to 109 deaths and 344 injured across the country. The deadliest province is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where 55 fatalities were recorded, followed by Punjab with 36‑55 deaths. More than half of the fatalities resulted from the collapse of houses or roofs, and flash‑floods caused several drownings. In Lahore, authorities opened at least 17 flood‑relief camps for displaced residents. The Punjab government issued a 60‑day ban on bathing in streets, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes as water levels remain high. While the major rivers are currently within “safe limits,” the Pakistan Meteorological Department warned that another spell of heavy rain is expected from late July, raising the risk of further flooding, landslides and infrastructure damage. Emergency response teams remain on heightened alert, and officials continue to urge residents in vulnerable areas to follow safety advisories.
