Pakistan monsoon floods cause fatalities and infrastructure failure in Lahore
Pakistan is facing a severe humanitarian emergency as the monsoon season reaches its twelfth spell, causing widespread flooding, landslides, and glacial lake outbursts across several provinces.
In Lahore, heavy downpours have overwhelmed the city's drainage infrastructure, submerging major thoroughfares, underpasses, and low-lying residential areas. The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) reported an average rainfall of 24.6mm, with extreme concentrations of 104mm recorded at the airport. The flooding has paralyzed urban mobility and forced the use of backup generators at emergency disposal stations due to power outages.
Nationwide, the impact has been devastating. As of August 3, the death toll has reached 145, with hundreds injured and more than 1,000 homes destroyed or damaged. In the Punjab province, approximately 400 square kilometers of land, including parts of Sheikhupura, Muridke, and Gujranwala, are underwater. In the northern region, a glacial lake outburst in Chitral resulted in at least two deaths and cut off local communities.
