Pakistan to seek 174 legislative amendments for IMF programme

Pakistan is preparing to present approximately 174 legislative amendments to Parliament to satisfy requirements for its International Monetary Fund (IMF) economic programme. Finance Secretary Imdadullah Bosal informed the National Assembly's finance committee that these changes are necessary to secure continued funding under the IMF's 8.4 billion dollar package.

The proposed legal reforms span several critical sectors, including taxation, the energy sector, state-owned enterprises, privatization, and the management of the sovereign wealth fund. The government has already begun implementing certain measures, such as eliminating tax exemptions and restricting additional grants to government departments.

As part of the fourth review of the programme, the IMF mission has been conducting meetings with officials from the State Bank of Pakistan and the Sindh provincial government. During these briefings, State Bank officials reported that Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves have surpassed 17 billion dollars. While approximately 4.1 billion dollars have been disbursed so far, the continuation of the programme remains contingent on meeting structural benchmarks and fiscal consolidation targets.
