Pakistan new provinces debate requires parliamentary approval
Rana Sanaullah, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs, stated that a referendum regarding the creation of new provinces in Pakistan would only occur if approved by a joint session of parliament. Speaking in Lahore, Sanaullah noted that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is currently consulting on its position and has not yet initiated the proposal, though the matter may be discussed in parliament as early as October.
The debate over administrative restructuring could take between six to eight months. Lawmakers may consider various options, including the creation of new provinces, new administrative units, or holding local government elections. Sanaullah clarified that the PML-N's local leadership in Punjab has expressed reservations regarding certain configurations, such as including Bahawalpur with South Punjab.
Additionally, Sanaullah addressed political tensions, suggesting that relations between the PML-N and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have eased. He also touched upon potential back-channel contacts with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and commented on the need for peaceful political demonstrations.
