Pakistan-occupied Kashmir election violence prompts HRCP call for investigation

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) said it was "deeply alarmed" after clashes between security forces and protesters in Rawalakot during the first phase of the Pakistan‑occupied Jammu and Kashmir legislative elections. Reports indicate at least 20 people were killed and dozens more injured, with injuries described as critical and the death toll potentially rising.

HRCP demanded an immediate end to the cycle of violence, restraint from authorities, and a prompt, impartial and independent investigation into the use of force, calling for accountability of anyone responsible for unlawful actions. The violence spread to other towns such as Mirpur, with allegations that live ammunition was used against demonstrators. The rights body urged that public order be maintained without compromising the right to life or peaceful assembly as the remaining election phases approach.
