Rehman Baba Express derails near Multan, killing at least 4

The Rehman Baba Express, traveling from Karachi to Peshawar, derailed near the Sher Shah Railway Station in the Multan district of Punjab, Pakistan, early Tuesday morning. The accident, which occurred around 5:15 am, resulted in at least 4 to 6 fatalities and left between 30 and 40 passengers injured. All 14 carriages of the train reportedly left the tracks, with some coaches overturning.

Rescue operations were conducted by Rescue 1122, police, and railway officials. The injured were transported to Nishtar Hospital in Multan for emergency treatment. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari expressed their condolences and directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the victims.

Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi confirmed that the train had undergone mechanical inspection at Samasatta Railway Junction prior to the incident, raising questions regarding the cause. Locopilot Rizwan Abbas reported feeling a sudden jolt while traveling at approximately 100 km/h before applying emergency brakes. A high-level inquiry, led by the Federal Government Inspector of Railways, has been launched to investigate the cause of the derailment.
