Pakistan Petroleum Minister visits Saudi Arabia amid energy crisis
Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has arrived in Saudi Arabia to attend the 17th International Energy Forum (IEF) Ministerial in Riyadh. The visit occurs as Pakistan faces a severe energy supply crisis characterized by rising fuel costs and disrupted liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports.
The energy shortage is linked to the US-Iran conflict, which has impacted shipments from Qatar. QatarEnergy has extended its suspension of deliveries to Pakistan until November 5, forcing the country to seek alternative sources before the winter season. Consequently, petrol and diesel prices have risen significantly, approaching Rs400 per liter.
While Islamabad implemented a fuel relief scheme for low-income motorists, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has advised the government to phase out these subsidies due to their high cost. During the forum, Malik is expected to participate in discussions regarding investment and trade in sustainable energy solutions to improve accessibility and affordability.
