Pakistan fuel prices could hit Rs1,000 per litre amid supply fears
Pakistan's Petroleum Minister, Ali Pervaiz Malik, has warned that petrol prices could surge to Rs1,000 per litre if the country faces a significant fuel shortage. While Malik emphasized that there is currently no shortage, he noted that global oil prices have risen by approximately 80%, while domestic prices have increased by about 50% since March.
The warning comes amid heightened volatility in global energy markets caused by Middle East tensions, including Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabian infrastructure and disruptions in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. These geopolitical factors threaten the stability of Pakistan's oil supply chain, which relies heavily on imports from the Gulf.
To mitigate the impact on citizens, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has implemented a relief scheme providing a Rs100 per litre discount for motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers, and owners of vehicles up to 800cc. Additionally, the government is working toward domestic energy security, with expectations of discovering domestic crude oil by October and commitments to prevent gas shortages during the winter months.
