Pakistan PM orders overhaul of agricultural research and AI systems

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered a comprehensive overhaul of Pakistan’s agricultural sector to enhance productivity and food security. Under the Agriculture Innovation and Growth Plan 2026–27, the government is prioritizing research, technology adoption, and support for small and medium-scale farmers.

Key initiatives include reforming the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) and the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) to align with international standards. The NARC master plan involves dividing the center into seven districts and establishing five centers of excellence, reference laboratories, and a private sector research park.

The modernization effort emphasizes digital tools, such as AI-based applications for pest and plant identification, and a SUPARCO-led crop assessment program for better yield forecasting. To support farmers, the government is implementing measures like Kisan Ghar refinance, crop insurance, and farm machinery loans. Additionally, efforts are underway to promote organic agriculture through pilot clusters in Balochistan and the development of a national organic policy with digital traceability to meet international market requirements.
