Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif responds to opposition on election official appointments
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formally responded to National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai regarding the appointment of a new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and members of the Election Commission of Pakistan. The Prime Minister assured Achakzai that constitutional procedures will be strictly followed during the selection process.
In an effort to facilitate these appointments, the Prime Minister has invited Achakzai for consultations. While the invitation has been confirmed by sources, Achakzai has not yet responded. This process is a constitutional requirement, necessitating that the Prime Minister consult with the opposition leader before forwarding names to a 12-member parliamentary committee for consideration.
The appointment follows the conclusion of incumbent CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja’s term on January 26, 2025. The selection process remains a point of interest for various political figures, including former opposition leader Omar Ayub, as the government seeks to navigate the appointment amidst ongoing political tensions.
