Pakistan police use fishing nets to block drone attacks

Police in the Hangu district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province have implemented a low-cost defense mechanism to protect security outposts from drone attacks. Officers have installed fishing nets overhead, strung between rooftops and perimeter walls, to create an aerial ceiling designed to catch or defuse explosive-carrying drones.

The measure follows a violent April 16 attack on the Sarki Piyala police checkpost, which was claimed by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). During that confrontation, drones carrying explosives were used against the post, resulting in the death of an armored vehicle driver and injuries to a constable. Local police report that since the installation of the netting two months ago, no further drone attacks have occurred at the Sarki Piyala location.
