Pakistan potentially acquires Chinese HQ-17AE air-defence system
A promotional video released by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has provided visual evidence suggesting the acquisition of the Chinese HQ-17AE mobile short-range air-defence (SHORAD) missile system. While Pakistani officials have not formally named the equipment, analysts note that the six-wheeled vehicle with a large rectangular radar array shown in the footage closely matches the system developed by China’s CASIC.
The HQ-17AE is designed to protect frontline assets, air bases, and command centers from drones, cruise missiles, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft. It features an engagement envelope with a range of approximately 1.5 to 20 km and an altitude capability of up to 10 km. The system is optimized for high-mobility operations, allowing for target tracking and engagement while moving.
This potential transfer marks a deepening of military technology cooperation between Islamabad and Beijing. If confirmed, the deployment of the HQ-17AE would aim to fill critical gaps in Pakistan’s layered air-defence architecture and enhance its field air-defence capabilities in South Asia.
