Pakistan Prime Minister sets wheat price at Rs4,500 per maund

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has proposed a wheat price of Rs4,500 per maund (40kg) for the 2027 crop season. This represents a Rs1,000 increase from the previous year's rate of Rs3,500. The government stated the price hike is intended to help farmers manage rising production costs, such as fuel and agricultural inputs, while encouraging domestic cultivation to reduce reliance on wheat imports.

While the Markazi Kisan League welcomed the price increase as a positive step for farmers, the organization warned that the benefits depend on the government's ability to actively purchase and store the crop. The league emphasized that rebuilding state reserves through a formal procurement plan with all provinces is essential to ensure the price is realized by growers.
