Saudi Arabia launches 14‑nation maritime coalition to safeguard Red Sea shipping
Saudi Arabia announced the creation of a 14‑nation Multinational Maritime Defence Alliance aimed at protecting the Bab al‑Mandab Strait, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The move follows a series of attacks by Iran‑backed Houthi rebels, who declared a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia and targeted commercial vessels.
Fourteen founding members – Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Sudan, Djibouti, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, Yemen, Nigeria and Somalia – signed a joint statement at a high‑level meeting in Riyadh attended by representatives of 43 countries and the European Union, out of 51 invited. Saudi Arabia will host the coalition’s permanent headquarters, joint command and operational centre.
The coalition’s charter stresses a purely defensive character, compliance with the UN Charter and the protection of freedom of navigation and international energy supply routes. The United Arab Emirates and Oman did not join the founding group. Houthi leader Abdul‑Malik al‑Houthi warned of a “full escalation” in response to the coalition’s launch.
