Pakistan provinces order urgent fire safety audits in public hospitals

Authorities in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces have launched major initiatives to enhance fire safety and emergency preparedness in public hospitals.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the provincial government has ordered a province-wide review of fire safety arrangements. The assessment, involving Civil Defence and Rescue 1122, aims to identify weaknesses in emergency response mechanisms and ensure facilities can protect patients and staff. The KP Health Secretary has directed the establishment of fire safety committees at divisional and district levels to oversee risks and improve coordination with emergency departments.

In Punjab, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered immediate safety audits, infrastructure upgrades, and regular mock drills across all public-sector hospitals. Deputy Commissioners are tasked with inspecting firefighting equipment and emergency exits in coordination with Rescue 1122. Additionally, health secretaries have been given a three-day deadline to inspect electrical wiring and medical equipment to prevent hazards, while a one-week deadline has been set for feasibility reports regarding infrastructure improvements.
