Pakistan ranked most terror-affected country by Global Terrorism Index
According to the Global Terrorism Index 2026 by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Pakistan has become the most terror-affected country in the world for the first time. In 2025, the country recorded 1,045 terrorist incidents resulting in 1,139 deaths. This represents a 6 percent increase in fatalities, marking the sixth consecutive year of rising deaths from terrorism in the nation.
The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) remains the most lethal organization, responsible for 595 incidents and 637 deaths, which accounts for 56 percent of all terrorism-related fatalities in the country. The report highlights that increased activity by militant groups along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border has occurred following the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan in 2021. The regions of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been the most heavily impacted.
While global trends show a decline in terrorism, with a 28 percent drop in deaths and a 22 percent drop in incidents worldwide in 2025, Pakistan's situation has moved in the opposite direction. Former Pakistani Ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani, commented on the findings, suggesting that the country is facing the consequences of decades of supporting extremist organizations.
