Imran Khan’s sisters detained in Lahore ahead of PTI protest
Authorities in Lahore have detained three sisters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan—Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan, and Noreen Niazi—ahead of a planned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest on September 27.
The detentions were ordered by the Lahore Deputy Commissioner under Section 3 of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, 1960. Officials stated the women were being held for 30 days because their activities were deemed prejudicial to public safety and order. Authorities specifically alleged that Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi were involved in the May 9 protests and had incited supporters to damage property.
Aleema Khan was reportedly detained while leaving her home in Upper Mall to go to a gym. All three sisters have been transferred to Kot Lakhpat Jail. While Aleema’s sons, Sher Shah and Shahrez, were briefly taken into custody, they were later released.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan condemned the arrests as political victimization and a step toward increasing regional tensions, maintaining that the party’s upcoming march to Islamabad will remain peaceful and political. In response to the planned protest, security forces in Islamabad have begun reinforcing major roads and the Red Zone with containers and soil-filled bags.
