Pakistan receives first October LNG cargo from Qatar amid winter energy concerns
Pakistan has received its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo from Qatar for October, delivered by the vessel ‘Al-Arish’ to the Engro LNG terminal. The shipment, which began re-gasification on Tuesday, is adding 150 million cubic feet of regasified LNG daily to the national gas network.
Despite this arrival, concerns regarding a potential energy crisis during the upcoming winter season persist. Experts warn that gas demand could surge significantly; for instance, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) demand may rise from 550 million cubic feet to 1,550 million cubic feet daily, while Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) demand could increase from 300 million to 500 million cubic feet.
Supply stability remains uncertain due to a force majeure declared by QatarEnergy on March 4, following an attack on the Ras Laffan facility in early March. This force majeure has been extended multiple times and is currently set to last until November 6. Additionally, the Pakistan GasPort Limited (PGPL) terminal has been inactive since October 9 due to low reserves, though officials hope to secure another shipment within 8 to 10 days. If supply shortages continue, industrial sectors including cement and CNG production may face disruptions.
