Pakistan implements austerity measures and fuel cuts amid energy crisis

The Pakistani government has implemented a sweeping three-month austerity and fuel-conservation package to combat rising energy costs and economic pressure caused by Middle East tensions and global oil volatility.

Key measures include a 50% reduction in fuel allocations for non-operational government vehicles and a complete ban on the purchase of new state vehicles and most durable goods, with an exception for IT equipment. To reduce travel expenses, foreign travel for ministers and officials is restricted for three months, and official meetings are encouraged to be held via teleconferencing. Additionally, ministries have been ordered to reduce non-employee-related expenditures by 5% monthly during the 2026-27 fiscal year.

Public-facing restrictions include mandatory 9 pm closures for shops, markets, and malls, 10 pm closures for wedding halls, and 11 pm closures for restaurants and cafes. A 'single-dish rule' has also been imposed for marriage functions. Essential services such as hospitals, pharmacies, and petrol pumps are exempt from these operating hour restrictions.

To mitigate the impact on citizens, the federal government has launched a fuel relief scheme. Eligible owners of motorcycles, rickshaws, and vehicles up to 800cc can receive a subsidy of Rs100 per litre on a capped monthly quota.
