Pakistan soybean imports from US exceed one million tons annually
Pakistan's annual imports of US soybeans have surpassed one million metric tons, establishing the country as a leading global destination for the commodity. This growth reflects increasing domestic demand in Pakistan and serves to strengthen agricultural trade ties between Islamabad and Washington.
During the US Soy Connext Conference in Chicago, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, met with Jim Sutter, CEO of the US Soybean Export Council (USSEC). The discussions focused on expanding cooperation across the soybean value chain through technical collaboration, knowledge sharing, and enhanced business-to-business linkages.
Soybeans are a critical protein source for Pakistan's poultry, livestock, and dairy industries. While trade previously faced disruptions due to restrictions on genetically modified soybean seeds in 2022, the subsequent authorization of imports from approved suppliers has facilitated the resumption of shipments and supported the nation's food-processing sectors.
