Pakistan Stock Exchange plunges amid political tensions

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) experienced a significant downturn as the benchmark KSE-100 index plunged nearly 2,000 points due to escalating political tensions. The sell-off was triggered by the collapse of talks between the government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, which failed to reach a breakthrough regarding counterterrorism policy and access to jailed PTI founder Imran Khan.

As PTI proceeds with a planned march toward Islamabad, investor confidence has been rattled, leading to heavy selling pressure across multiple sectors, including commercial banking, cement, power generation, and oil and gas. While falling international oil prices typically benefit Pakistan's economy, they failed to offset the domestic political anxiety. Market analysts note that institutional caution and reduced retail participation have contributed to increased volatility, with many investors adopting a “wait-and-see” approach until political clarity emerges.
