Pakistan targets $8 billion in mineral exports via critical reserves

Pakistan is positioning itself as a major destination for critical minerals, leveraging extensive reserves estimated at $8 trillion. The country has identified 92 different minerals, 52 of which are currently being extracted for commercial use. Despite this potential, the mining sector currently contributes less than 3% to the national GDP.

To boost economic growth, the government aims to increase annual mineral exports from $3 billion to $8 billion through improved infrastructure, governance, and international partnerships. A central component of this strategy is the Reko Diq copper and gold project in Balochistan. This project, a joint venture involving Barrick Gold Corporation, is expected to begin its first phase of production by the end of 2028, with projected annual outputs of 240,000 tonnes of copper and 297,000 ounces of gold.

Pakistan is also seeking international collaboration, having signed agreements with US-based US Strategic Metals. To further attract global interest, the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum 2026 is scheduled to take place in Islamabad on November 12 and 13.
