Pakistan to chair IMF and World Bank boards in 2027

Pakistan has been named the incoming chair of the Boards of Governors for both the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group for 2027. This appointment, announced during the 2026 WBG-IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok, marks the first time the country will hold this leadership position since 1953.

Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, who also serves as Pakistan’s governor to the World Bank, will lead the boards. The chairmanship is expected to provide Pakistan a platform to influence global economic discussions, advocate for developing nations, and promote sustainable development financing.

The announcement comes as Pakistan works through significant economic reforms and international financial support. The country is currently engaged in a $7 billion IMF Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and a $1.4 billion Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF). Additionally, Pakistan is awaiting approval for a potential $1.2 billion IMF tranche following recent program reviews.

Separately, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb reported that Pakistan’s economy showed signs of recovery, with GDP expanding by 3.7% in fiscal year 2026. He noted that tax collection has increased by 40% over the last two fiscal years, driven by digitalization and structural reforms aimed at shifting the economic model from consumption-led to investment and export-led growth.
