Pakistan to Import One Million Tonnes of Wheat to Stabilize Prices

The federal government of Pakistan approved the immediate import of one million tonnes of wheat after extensive consultations with provincial authorities. Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain announced the decision, citing a significant supply gap and rising wheat and flour prices across the country.

Officials estimate a shortfall of roughly 2.5‑2.55 million tonnes for the 2026‑27 marketing year, with demand around 34.3 million tonnes and available supply about 31.8 million tonnes. The import aims to meet provincial demand, prevent market volatility, and keep wheat and flour prices stable nationwide.
