Pakistan to set wheat prices before sowing season

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has identified the provision of affordable farm inputs as a top priority for the Pakistani government. During the first meeting of the National Agriculture and Food Security Council in Islamabad, Sharif emphasized that providing farmers with quality seeds, affordable fertilizers, modern machinery, and technical expertise for efficient water use is essential for economic growth.

Regarding wheat management, the Prime Minister stated that the government will finalize wheat prices through consultations with provincial governments before the upcoming sowing season. This timing is intended to ensure farmers receive fair returns on their investment while maintaining affordable prices for consumers. Sharif confirmed that current wheat stocks are sufficient to meet domestic requirements but warned that the government will take strict action against those involved in hoarding the commodity.

Additionally, the Prime Minister highlighted the potential of the livestock sector to boost national exports, specifically noting efforts to expand halal meat exports. He also commended provincial initiatives in Punjab and Sindh aimed at farmer welfare, such as aquaculture, shrimp farming, and direct subsidies.
