Pakistan transport safety concerns after bus crash, rail speed limits
A bus carrying pilgrims overturned on the M2 Motorway near the Bhera interchange, injuring 13 people. The vehicle collided with a stationary truck that was stopped for a tyre change, prompting Rescue 1122 to provide emergency care and transport five critically injured victims to hospital. Local officials opened an investigation and highlighted broader infrastructure shortcomings, including recent road and drainage failures in Sargodha.
Separately, Pakistan Railways reported a system‑wide inspection of roughly 11,900 kilometres of track, finding many sections past their useful life. To protect passengers, engineering speed restrictions have been imposed on vulnerable track sections until rehabilitation work is completed. The railway also outlined plans to modernise signalling systems, including the installation of computer‑based interlocking, under the Public Sector Development Programme.
