Reserve Bank of India sells $7 billion to support rupee

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) intervened in the foreign‑exchange market at the end of July 2026, selling roughly $7 billion of dollars in on‑shore and off‑shore markets. The large direct sale helped lift the Indian rupee to about 95.30–95.74 per U.S. dollar, ending a five‑session rally and moving the currency roughly 1.3 % above its recent record low. The RBI’s action came amid falling global crude‑oil prices, continued foreign‑capital inflows and a stronger greenback that had capped earlier gains. In the same period India’s foreign‑exchange reserves rose by $6.1 billion to $682.35 billion, keeping the total reserve buffer near $689 billion, which the central bank can draw on for further market support.
