Paklenica National Park features former secret Yugoslav military tunnels
The Paklenica Underground City, a complex of tunnels spanning over 1,500 square meters, has been transformed from a secret military installation into a visitor center within Paklenica National Park in Croatia.
Constructed by the Yugoslav People's Army between 1950 and 1953, the tunnels were built during a period of intense political tension between Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. The site remained largely unknown to the public for decades due to its status as a strictly guarded military secret. During the Croatian War of Independence in 1991, the Croatian military utilized the space as a warehouse.
Following the war, the complex was assigned to Paklenica National Park, which began renovations in 2000. The visitor center officially opened to the public in August 2016, with further expansions in 2022. The facility now features halls dedicated to the natural and cultural heritage of the Velebit mountain range, interactive light and sound displays, and a climbing center designed for enthusiasts.
