Paks II nuclear project faces uncertainty over Russian ties

The Paks II nuclear power plant expansion project faces increasing uncertainty regarding its future and its contractual relationship with Russia's Rosatom. While construction is physically progressing—with the first concrete pouring for the 5th reactor block already completed and the delivery of a 730-ton zone melt trap in August 2024—political questions remain.

There are growing calls for a review of the expansion, fueled by concerns over the project's costs and its ties to Russia. Although Rosatom has expressed readiness for dialogue and manufacturing of reactor components is underway, the Hungarian government has not provided specific responses to the company's inquiries. Meanwhile, turbine production has commenced in Belfort, France, to be supplied by Alstom.
