The Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Hungary is facing operational risks due to critically low water levels in the Danube river. To prevent a total shutdown of the facility, authorities have initiated emergency measures to raise the river's level.

Key interventions include the construction of a bottom sill using 145,000 cubic meters of rock and the controlled submersion of two 80-meter long barges. The project, estimated to cost approximately 6.2 billion HUF, aims to ensure sufficient water flow for cooling the plant's reactors.

While the plant previously had to reduce output to 240 megawatts, recent efforts have allowed for the reconnection of a second turbine. Officials have noted that the next 48 hours are critical for maintaining stability, though there is hope that expected rainfall and the ongoing construction will allow for the reconnection of idle turbines starting this Sunday.
