Paks nuclear plant restarts turbine as Danube water levels rise
The Paks nuclear power plant in Hungary has begun the process of restarting a turbine following a rise in the Danube river's water level. Due to a prolonged heatwave and extreme drought across Europe, the river had reached record lows, forcing the plant—which provides approximately 40 percent of Hungary's electricity—to operate at only about 10 percent of its capacity.
Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced that the Danube rose 19 centimeters compared to its previous low point, allowing the third turbine of the second block to resume electricity generation. While this offers temporary relief, officials cautioned that the rise may be short-lived as no significant rainfall is expected in the coming days.
In response to the energy crisis, the Hungarian government has announced plans to diversify its energy supply. This includes a tender for 700 megawatts of wind power capacity by August 31 and a long-term goal to develop 4 GW of wind power capacity by 2030. Additionally, the government is looking into long-term solutions to mitigate climate-related energy risks, including a potential review of the Paks 2 expansion project due to its continued reliance on Danube cooling water.
