Paks Nuclear Power Plant: Emergency measures taken due to low Danube water levels
Péter Magyar has announced emergency measures to maintain the operation of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant amid critically low water levels in the Danube. While a Romanian nuclear plant was forced into a complete shutdown for at least 10 days, the Hungarian government rejected political proposals to do the same, opting instead to implement technical solutions to ensure continuous energy production.
Currently, the water level at Paks is approximately -119 to -120 centimeters. If the level reaches -140 centimeters, the entire plant must be shut down, a move that would result in an estimated monthly economic loss of 50 billion forints. To mitigate the crisis, the government has begun preparations to build a weir and has prepared two barges for controlled sinking to assist with water level management.
Two turbines at the plant are currently operating under non-standard conditions. Officials emphasized that all technical decisions were made with national nuclear security as the primary priority.
