China dominates world's most visited museums list

The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) has released its annual index for 2025, highlighting the world's 20 most-visited museums. China significantly leads the rankings with 12 entries in the top 20. The Palace Museum in Beijing holds the first position, recording 19 million visitors last year.

TEA attributes China's dominance to a massive domestic audience and the fact that 91% of the country's 7,188 registered museums offer free admission. Other top Chinese sites include the Summer Palace and the Museum of Emperor Qin Shihuang's Mausoleum Site.

Europe accounts for five of the top 20 museums. The Louvre and the Palace of Versailles are the highest-ranking European institutions, followed by the Natural History Museum in London, the Vatican Museums, and the British Museum. Other global representatives include two museums in South Korea and one in the United States.
